Welsh Assembly Elections
As the Welsh Assembly Election approaches REM in Wales have sent a letter and declaration to each party leader (English only) :
Nathan Gill, UKIP Wales
Alice Hooker-Stroud, Welsh Green Party
Carwyn Jones, Welsh Labour
Kirsty Williams, Welsh Liberal Democrats
Leanne Wood, Plaid Cymru/The Party of Wales
in order to establish their commitment to a raft of national and international equality and human rights instruments to which the United Kingdom is party. These are set out in the letter and declaration sent to each party leader and can be found by following the link below.
We have received unqualified support from Plaid Cymru, Welsh Green Party, Welsh Labour and Welsh Liberal Democrats. The Welsh Conservatives and UKIP Wales gave us statements.
From the Welsh Conservatives:
“At last year’s general election, the Conservative Party’s manifesto included a commitment to establish a British Bill of Rights – a measure I supported. Given this manifesto was endorsed by the British public in the form of returning a Conservative Majority Government at Westminster, I will be unable to add my name to your document.”
From UKIP Wales:
“UKIP has a policy that we do not sign other organisations documents. The main issue is the ECHR one.”
We are considering our response and a press release will be issued in due course.
